Intro
In the early 1940s, the Soviet Union rules Poland under a dictatorship, the authorities arrests many Polish military officers and government personnels and sends them to concentration camps for "re-education through labour". There, they are subjected to inhuman and unbearable torture. To survive, Janusz, Smith and five other political prisoners manages to escape from the concentration camp and sets out on a journey back to the civilized and free world. All the way south, they encounters such sufferings as hunger, ice and snow, storm, and so on, goes through Mongolia, crosses gobi desert, passes through Tibet, crosses the Himalayas, and finally reaches India that was then part of the British Commonwealth.
